All baptized believers are welcome to receive Holy Communion at The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. We believe the invitation to the Table comes from Christ and is the privilege of all God's children. We also believe and teach that the bread and wine of the Holy Communion are for us Jesus' true body and blood.
Will I be expected to give an offering?
No. There is no price attached to coming to worship; there is no fee to be a church member. What you give, and whether you give, is between you and God. All of our offerings are "free will" offerings; people give whenever and whatever they like.
Where do offerings go?
The offerings support the mission and ministry of the church. Much of our offerings go to pay for things like church building utilities and maintenance, staff salaries, Sunday School materials, etc. The congregation gives at least 10% of what it receives to ministries beyond our own congregation, such as our synod. The congregation sets a budget each year and each month detailed financial reports are made available to the congregation so that they can know where their offerings go.
How do I join The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church?
If you are interested in joining the congregation, please talk to the pastor. If you are coming from another Lutheran congregation, we can request a letter of transfer for you. Both those transferring to The Good Shepherd and those joining a Lutheran church for the first time will be invited to one of our periodic orientation sessions where the basics of the Lutheran faith will be covered. New members are recognized in worship several times a year.
What synod is The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church part of?
The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) the largest Lutheran body in the United States with about 4-7 million members. The two other major U.S. Lutheran organizations are the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, with 2.5 million members, and the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod with 1 million members. Regionally, we are part of the Southwestern Pennsylvania Synod of the ELCA (SW PA Synod), one of 65 synods in the ELCA. There are 201 Lutheran congregations in the SW PA synod.
What do you have here for young people?
September through May there are Sunday School classes for all ages. There is also a Confirmation program for young people in grades 7-10. Elsewhere on this website you will find a complete list of year round youth activities. There are events and programs for youth virtually every week, and often several times a week, in our congregation including retreats, lock-ins, service projects, educational programs and more.
How do I schedule a wedding or baptism?
Talk with the pastor. Normally baptisms are done for children of church members, and one of the couple to be married must be a church member. A copy of our wedding policy is available on this website.
